UPDATE: Forgotten Felines now have their own
standalone website at
www.forgottenfelines.co.nz
About Forgotten Felines
Forgotten Felines is a non profit organisation dedicated to the
rescue and care of stray and abandoned cats on Auckland's North
Shore and more recently in the Hibiscus Coast area. We are
completely in favour of all cats being desexed prior to going to
homes and also actively campaign to stop people abandoning their cat
when they move house.
Our main aim is to trap, desex and return the adults then
look after them in their environment while removing any kittens and
finding them caring homes. Forgotten Felines is a registered charity
and a member of the NZ Companion Animal Council.
The organisation began in 1995 when the founder, Sylvia
Fairburn discovered stray cats and kittens at a site in Browns Bay.
The kittens were all caught and although very scared, were
socialised by Sylvia till homes were found for them. The adults were
all desexed then returned to the site they had called home and fed
daily. This original colony of cats still live in Browns Bay and
are still fed daily by wonderful volunteers. Their numbers are of
course now much reduced. Inspired by this Sylvia went on to other
colonies in the area... Forgotten Felines was born.
Our volunteers feed colonies, of which there are now over 20,
ensuring that the cats needs are looked after. This includes
trapping again if it is thought that a cat needs vet attention, to
ensure that all the cats under the protection of Forgotten Felines
live life to the fullest.
An abandoned non
desexed female, will be the founder of the next colony. She can
have two, sometimes three litters per year. On average four kittens
per litter. Say on average half are female. That’s four to six
females per year, and the offspring can start breeding at five
months, so hey presto within a year the one abandoned female has
become a colony of up to 24 breeding females. Forgotten Felines
are now finding that the abandoned/dumped cat is the biggest
problem facing cat rescue groups. The lack of control is appalling
and the increasing numbers of abandoned animals is frightening.
Through no fault of
their own, these cats are taken in as cute kittens. Then when it is
time for the owner to do the right thing and have their cat desexed,
instead they dump or abandon their pet. These cats are unable to
fend for themselves (yes, it is a myth that cats can feed
themselves!!!!!!!). A domestic cat only knows food comes out of
the fridge or a packet.
Cats and kittens for
adoption
We currently have cats with young kittens in our care, they are all
beautiful, and the kittens will be ready in six to eight
weeks. They will be vet checked, desexed and have their first
inoculation. Although SPCA help towards desexing, all other costs,
ie pain relief, worming, defleaing, food, litter etc, are covered by
ourselves, therefore we ask a donation of $100 for kittens and $50
for adults who are also desexed, wormed, deflead, and have had
first inoculations. If you think you can give a home to any of our
rescued cats or kittens then please leave a message for Sylvia on

Featured Forgotten Feline for adoption,
Luna...

Luna's story
Luna was a sad story,
she was brought in to the vet by owners who had left an abscess
untreated. When told that she would have to have surgery, the owner
said to put her down. She had such a lovely nature that the vet
decided to do the surgery anyway, and returned the cat to the owners
with the request that she be given antibiotics daily. This was not
done and the owners returned the cat to the vet some time later with
a very badly infected wound. At this point Forgotten Felines took
ownership of the cat, and she underwent more surgery to clean the
wound and has taken some time to recover.
Regardless of all the terrible pain this young girl has gone through
she has remained the most loving friendly little girl who is
thriving on being loved. She is now fully recovered, has been speyed,
and is ready to go to a caring home where she will be appreciated
for the beautiful cat that she is. Luna is approximately one year
old.

Success Stories
Over the years, we have had wonderful success stories, ranging from
the three week old baby that was swept away in a storm but was found
the next day, wet, scared and starving but on being taken home was
immediately mothered by Sylvia's Rottie cross female dog who took
over the licking bit of motherhood. There have been many kittens
over the years who have had to be bottle fed, often taken to work,
and most survived to become glorious adults. Many hundreds have
found good homes, and hopefully many more will do so in the future.
We will be putting
photos of the cats and kittens for rehoming on line soon.
