Animal Welfare, Animal Abuse and Cruelty in NZ
A resource for students

Are you doing an assignment on pets or animals? Or are you interested in knowing more and how to take action to help abused pets? Here are plenty of pointers to help you get the information you'll need.

Did you know there is now a Companion Animal Code in NZ for Cats and also Dogs? These important documents set new minimum standards in NZ for care of cats and dogs.

These needs include:
• proper and sufficient food and water
• adequate shelter
• opportunity to display normal patterns of behaviour
• physical handling in a manner which minimises the likelihood of unreasonable or
  unnecessary pain or distress
• protection from, and rapid diagnosis of, any significant injury or disease being a
need which, in each case, is appropriate to the species, environment and
  circumstances of the animal.

These are some sites we have found of interest in terms of Animal Welfare issues...(particularly for pets, but also animals in general i.e. wild animals/stock etc. Some are about animal law/rights and some do have some awful cases of abuse and neglect. Some are organisations at "the coalface", helping stop abuse and rehoming animals.

ARLAN (Animal Rights Legal Advocacy Network) New Zealand

Very good site, you'll find a lot here including legal arguments and backgrounds on the law behind animal welfare and the changes ARLAN are seeking. Also case law examples, fines given etc.
