What do you do is you see an organised dog
fight?
What if an animal is killed or injured in a traffic
accident?
What if you see an animal being neglected?
We asked Counties Manukau NZ Police for the answers
to some frequently asked
questions....
Q. To make a complaint about an animal or it’s
owner, who should I contact?
A. It depends on the circumstances. For serious incidents where persons/property is
injured or in danger call
the Police. For
nuisance/neglect type offences call
animal control or R/SPCA.
Q. The people next door are forever going away
and leaving their dog tied up
with no water and no one
appears to come and feed it. Who do I call?
A. Neglected animals and those in need of
shelter, water, food or good care should be
reported immediately to the
nearest SPCA or RSPCA, who have people trained
specifically to deal with
this sort of problem and are also responsible in
conjunction
with Council dog rangers,
for bringing a prosecution against the owner if it
is warranted.
Q. I
have just witnessed a dog attack on a person.
I’ve called 111 for an
ambulance for the person,
but who do I call to have the dog restrained?
A. If the dog is in immediate danger depending
on the seriousness it can be restrained if
possible.
Call the Police who will initially attend and
liase with a dog ranger.
Q.
There is a dog running down the side of the
motorway and I am concerned
there any be a serious
accident. Should
I call 111?

have direct lines to Dog Rangers.

Q. There
have been group of people hanging around our local park lately
with some dogs, which I have heard / seen
fighting. If I suspect this
is an organised dog fight, who should I
call?
A. Dog ranger (Council)
Q. We’ve just witnessed a dog / cat being accidentally run over and
the
driver did not stop.
Who should I call?
A. It is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act not to stop.
Call SPCA or local
council. Obtain
vehicle number, description of the car and if possible the driver.
SPCA or council will investigate.
(From Pets on the Net)
If the animal is still alive and injured, call the SPCA
immediately for emergency
help. In the case of a very badly injured animal that
is in pain, they can humanely
euthanise them to prevent any further suffering. The
SPCA will help sick and injured
animals and birds (both domestic and wild ie) pukeko, hedgehogs
etc.)
Q. We like to go for walks in the evening.
But lately we have been rushed
by a dog whose owner just laughs at us, when we
ask them to restrain
their dog. What should
we do?
A. Council dog control
office. If owners behaviour is threatening or abusive call the Police.
Q. I’m sitting in a park with my young
child and a dog is hanging around in a
concerning way that is not particularly friendly and
there is no sign of its
owner. What do I do?
A. Call the City Council dog ranger.
(From Pets on the Net)
Retreat quietly and slowly away with arms tucked into
body, holding your young
child. Do not run.
Q. Our neighbours’ cat continues to urinate all over our front
door, which
creates a really awful stink.
We have approached them but they don’t seem
to care. Who do I call about his problem?
A. Your first contact should be your local council who will put
you in touch with their
Animal Control Office for their advice. Unfortunatley
there is not much that can be
done, other than attempting to dissuade the cat by use
of an animal repellent,
available from you local vet, pet shop or grocery store
(From Pets on the Net)
If you have pets yourself, be cautious using repellent,
it may drive your pets away
too! We advise you try a full squirt bottle with water
in it and give them a good
strong squirt every time you see them on the property. Cats hate
being wet this
way, yet it won't hurt them (just don't squirt their eyes or
in their ears though!).
It's a good start to getting your message across!
Q. To make a complaint about an animal or it’s owner, who should
I contact?
A. It depends on the circumstances.
- For serious incidents where
persons/property are injured or in danger call
the
Police.
- For nuisance/neglect type offences call
animal control or RSPCA.
Final Note from the Police...
It is important to note that with any complaints you make to any of the
agencies listed
including Police, your details are kept completely confidential.
