The
virus can last up to 18 months in the environment
and cannot be killed easily by household
disinfectants or sunlight.
Despite
getting the proper veterinary treatment many
infected dogs will die. The treatment
can be very expensive.
Vaccination
is the best way to prevent infection with Parvo.
Puppies should be vaccinated from six to eight weeks
of age until 12 weeks. Puppies are at risk until
they have had all of their vaccinations. Keep your
puppy confined to your property and keep it isolated
from other dogs until fully protected by the
vaccinations. Adult dogs require vaccinations every
year to give them adequate protection.
Any
puppy under 12 weeks of age and any dog that has not
had any vaccinations within
the last 12 months is at risk.
If
you have any questions about vaccinations or wish to
get your dog vaccinated, ring your local vet clinic
or Wellington SPCA.
