Dear
Charlie,
We
met you in February 2004 at the SPCA in Mangere, Auckland. We couldn’t
make a decision so a kind volunteer just thrust you into my arms. You were
shaking, but you put your arms around my neck and didn’t let go. I think
that you wanted us as much as we wanted you. We named you Charlie.
We
made a little bed for you to sleep on, but you were having none of it.
From day one it was our bed that you slept in.
Charlie,
you stole a little piece of our heart that very first day, and over the
following weeks you stole the rest of our hearts as well. There were so
many things that you did to show us that you loved us. Every morning you
sat on your Daddy’s shoulder while he shaved. Even after you were too
big, Daddy would support your body with his arm twisted around behind him
(I think that he put his back out once or twice).
When
we came home you would always tell us stories about your day. We liked to
pretend that we understood what you were saying. You loved to be held and
cuddled and if you were especially glad to see us we got nose-lick kisses.
At
night you had a favourite sleeping position, and that was in the crook of
Daddy’s arm with your head resting on his shoulder. I used to love
coming to bed and seeing my “two favourite boys” together.
Everyone
who knew you loved you. How could they not? You were so loving and
affectionate that you touched the heart of everyone who met you.
One
morning in January
2005 you went outside. When you didn’t home to greet us that night we
knew something was wrong. We found you soon after. You looked as though
you were sleeping, but you had passed away.
We
don’t know why you were taken from us so soon. Maybe you
were just too fragile and precious for this world. But we are so
grateful that we are the ones who got to share your short life. You
brought us so much joy, and we think that you were pretty happy with us
too.
We
will never, ever forget you Charlie.
