Asher -
Ours to love for a little while
It is a year ago today since, on 31 January 2005, we went to see a
little white cat at the SPCA in the hope that he might be our beloved
missing white cat Titus. He wasn't, but he "called" to us anyway and
after thinking about it for a few days we decided to adopt him as
company for our little black cat Thomas. Because of an oil stain on his
tail (from his habit of sleeping under cars), but mostly because we
adopted him very shortly before he was due to be put to sleep, it seemed
fitting to name him Asher which means "fortunate" and "dipped in oil".
A pretty 2-3 year old cat with an extremely silky coat, Asher turned out to be playful and affectionate,
enjoying his new home.
Sadly, Thomas was killed just 9 days later (see memorial to
George and Thomas) and
Asher settled down to being our only cat for a while before being
"invaded" a couple of months later by our son moving back home with his
3 cats! Although the older female Ivy and he did not get on at all, he
got on quite well with the younger female Wednesday, and played happily
with the little kitten Jack.
We wondered sometimes if Asher had a health problem
as he would get suddenly very grumpy for no apparent
reason and, although keen to play with Jack, it sometimes seemed to hurt
him. However, his grumpiness was always short-lived and the rest of the
time he was extremely active and very loving, and the longer we had him,
and the more love we gave him, the happier he got.
Then in November he became a little off-colour and off his food, but was
still quite active,
playing, climbing trees and getting up onto the garage roof so he could
sit and "beg" the birds to come down for the bread we'd left them up
there thinking it safe from the cats! If he'd still been a bit poorly
in another day or so we would have taken him to a vet but on the morning
of 10 November the neighbour across the river (whom he used to happily
visit sometimes) came over with sorrow to tell us that the river workers
(who come quite infrequently, but chose to come that day) had found him
lying dead under one of her trees. He was unmarked and lying quite
peacefully, and appeared to have simply died sometime during the night.
So I guess he was always on "borrowed time", not just because of his
in-the-nick-of-time adoption.
It's good that he was found so soon after his death before
we'd even had time to worry as to his absence, but we
are all so sad that he has gone so suddenly, and we miss him terribly.
However, it is a comfort to know that, by adopting him, we were able to
give him an extra 9+ months of a happy life, with lots of love and
cuddles, and a home that he would otherwise not have had.
