GSD Rescue
and Pets on the Net
"Pets on the Net - you have a fantastic
service.
Finding perfect homes
for German Shepherds has been made a lot easier
with the Pets on the Nets service.
More and more responses are coming in from
Shepherds that I have advertised needing homes.
Despite the fact the particular dog advertised has
found its forever home, the enquiries still some
in and these people are actually putting there
names down for when a rescue Shepherd comes in
needing a home and those who have obtained their
new companions through seeing them on advertised
on Pets on the Net have referred their friends.
Dogs have been rehomed from Kaitaia to Otaki, New
Plymouth, Napier, Auckland, Tokoroa, Taupo, places
I never would have been able to find without you.
For the first time
EVER I have a WAITING LIST for homes, I have 2 new
foster homes and I have people offering
transportation. Thank you Pets on the Net, I
cannot thank you enough. You have made it
possible, through your resource, to give a longer
life to many of this magnificent breed.."

Grief leads to Rescue...
”If I can’t help you my darling, I’ll help your friends” vowed
Denise Sharp to her beloved German Shepherd Yani. Despite every possible
veterinary intervention from Denise, Yani passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Denise had already rescued a few of Yani’s breed and after her sad
passing, she found a positive outlet and tribute to her by establishing
the German Shepherd Rescue.
Just one year on Denise has rescued and re homed 62 German Shepherds (and
counting!), many of them via Pets on the Net. See our Pets
for Adoption for some of Denise's lovely rescue dogs.
”Pounds ring me now”, says Denise “I’ve got them educated now,
they used to ring me on the seventh day and I’d be up to 2am on Sunday
morning making phone calls to find fosters for the dogs”. With a bit
more time up her sleeve with the help of the pounds, Denise now has a few
days to find new homes.
”Any dog I rescue, when they are desexed at the pound, I take up food
for them, bedding and toys and bath them.”
”I don’t buy or sell dogs, I just recuperate the costs involved.
Animals are not a business, they need a home”.
” I have a very strict policy on rehoming, and no dog goes without a
home check. Involvement with my rescues does not end on signing them over
for permanent custody. They are all told that they can ring me anytime, 7
days a week, 24 hours a day, if they have any problems during the settling
in period. All are given information on obedience classes, private
and NZKC affiliate clubs, depending on where they live and what time suits
them. The two week trial period gives a good indication of whether
they dog will suit them and whether I feel they suit the dog, but they all
understand that some rescue dogs take a little longer to settle in a feel
secure.”
The costs must be many for Denise too, vet bills, toll bills, petrol, food
bills….
Fiona Hartley in Mercer helps by providing fostering and socialisation to
those in need of rehabilitation prior to rehoming. Fiona breeds New
Foundlands in Mercer, south of Auckland. Denise travels there once a week
from Auckland’s North Shore to Mercer to visit Fiona and her fosters and
to supply food.
Denise does all of this whilst also holding down a full time job. Nearly
every night she also works her own dogs and is heavily involved with
agility work, tracking fly ball and obedience with them. In her “spare
time” Denise also does the German
Shepherd Rescue website which she frequently updates. “ I don’t
get to bed before 1am in the morning” admits Denise.
(A recommended resource on her site is “Bonding with a Rescue Dog”
which starts with “Dogs who have been uprooted from their happy
homes or have not had the best start in life are more likely to bond very
completely and deeply with their new people…” )
Others help Denise in her quest too …. Angela ("forgotten her last
name - too early in the morning I guess") and Simone O'Meara
also help with my fostering, says Denise sleepily in an early morning
email. “Simone is the daughter of veterinarian, Kevin O'Meara of
Forrest Hill Vet Clinic. She takes care of the dogs that have just been
desexed if there is no immediate home for them to go to. Angela is
particularly good with the frightened, insecure dogs as she has a really
soothing manner. The Forrest Hill Vet clinic. Kevin, Mike Small,
Louise Spence and Tiffany Menzies, are wonderful if I need to have
medical care for any of my rescue dogs, accommodating me at short notice
on several occasions. They are the vets that cared for my Yani and I trust
their judgement and treatment implicitly.
I
also have a gentleman called Brian Watson who is presently helping with
"situational" obedience with a retired couple who have taken on
a 12 month old dog to help ease her into their life. He goes around
once a week and gives them guidelines on the small problems that have
cropped up through her insecurity. She is a totally different dog
now from when they first got her.
In the short time since knowing about Pets on the Net I have homed 10 dogs
through this free service.”
From Auckland and via petsonthenet.co.nz Denise has successfully rehomed
dogs all over the North Island. “Jana” went to New Plymouth and
“Jet” to Masterton. Denise also received her first donation via
petsonthenet.co.nz when a lady whose Shepherd had passed on gave her
dogs’ collars and leads to help with the Rescue.
My long term aim is to be able to have a facility (a German Shepherd
Sanctuary, which I will call "Yani's Haven"), where dogs that
are requiring long term care, or considered unadoptable due to age or
illness can live out the rest of their lives in comfort.
In recognition of Denises’ outstanding efforts for animals,
petsonthenet.co.nz award her our “ Pets on the Net Good Pet People
Award”. Well done Denise and this so well deserved for your passion and
commitment to helping these Shepherds to become “lucky dogs” through
your Rescue. We look forward to helping you rehome many more dogs in years
to come!
