Advice for lost and found pets
RNZSPCA recommend....

ALL lost and found pets, sighted and deceased pets, be listed on Petsonthenet's lost and found pet database"as it is important to keep as much information as possible in one place for ease of searching."

All pets found by SPCA Canterbury are posted onto Petsonthenet's Found Pet ads
See all SPCA Canterbury Found Pets

It is FREE to search lost or found pets and to place ads for lost and found pets on Petsonthenet
(at bronze level)

Fostering
If you need a foster for your quake affected pets, or can offer fostering (Canterbury or NZ wide) please post your requests/offers here under Fosters Wanted/Offered (please register first before palcing an ad)

Report all lost and found or possibly lost pets
Please do report pets that seem to be lost or hanging around that you don’t recognise.

Deceased Pets
Please post reports of deceased pets sighted on petsonthenet.co.nz. Please include a full description and location found. Take a photo if possible, but please do not post this on Petsonthenet..Do keep the photo so a potential owner can enquire directly with you for more information. After a period of time, if unclaimed the animal will need to be buried. Normally deceased pets are removed by council or ideally the remains taken by a finder in a suitable box etc to a local vet where they are stored in a freezer for a period of seven days. With power outages this may not be possible and burial may be the only option for sanitary purposes

Searching for a Lost Pet
See here for our everyday advice for finding lost pets (written for optimum non earthquake conditions...please improvise as best as you can, using our checklist as a guide ) . When searching Petsonthenet, click the Advanced Search tab to search by catgeory and REGION ie search ALL lost cats from Canterbury region.

We also highly recommend that you read Kat Albrechts specialised advice on
Recovering lost pets after an earthquake

Worries about pets without water, or food
In September I noted one post on a Stuff blog, where the poor lady was very worried for a cat left in an apartment building which was a "no go" zone. Although it is less than ideal, please know that cats are very resilient and have been known to survive long periods of time (up to 4.5 weeks) without food, or water. These are just some of our own genuine NZ success stories about cats that survived for long periods of time with no food or water...
Patches the cat found after 4.5 weeks with no food or water

Karma the cat trapped for four weeks
Pele the cat trapped in a ceiling for three weeks

Petsonthenet has been heavily involved in helping Cantabrian pets and their people since the September quake. Aftre the February 22 quake over 1300 ads for quake affected lost and found pets were palced on petsonthenet. Working in conjunction with the RSPCA and the NZ Companion Animal Register, 600 pets were reunited. We have gathered together advice from both NZ and international experts about lost pets and earthquakes. We trust this helps you find your lost pet, and keep them (and yourself) as stress free as possible when they do come home.
