German Shepherd
(GSD/Shep/Shepherd/Alsatian) |
|
"Mara" the German Shepherd
Here is Mara, she is a Pure Breed German Shepherd. She has the never
floppy ears, skinny legs and slim body shape of a pure Shepherd. The
slim body can come about as some German Shepherds are very fussy in
what they eat and when they eat. You can dump cooked steak in front
of them and they may not eat it!
Most breeders will tattoo the dog in the ear so you know who the
breeder was. This is a good way to find out where the dog came from
as well.
These dogs love water and will happily jump in just to cool off or
go for a playful swim. They require a lot of exercise and because of
their ability to jump may require a high fence. Daily exercise is a
must.
She also thrives on company. Quite happy to let someone else be the
"alpha" member she loves being praised and responds better
to positive reinforcement. However ignored she will whine or throw
toys or bounce around, anything to get your attention so be prepared
to spend some quality "doggytime" each day.
Extremely intelligent dogs they pick up commands easily, and don't
forget commands, places or people quickly ( 9 months between vet
visits and a street away you know she doesn't want to go this
direction). They also can get along with cats and children if
introduced to them properly.

He's got the most beautiful curly
tail!...no one has met him that didn't want to keep him!...he hardly
barks, never whines, doesn't jump or lick - drools a bit
though...and just loves to be your best bud!

Newfoundland
(Newfie/Newf)
|
|
"Jed"
the Newfoundland
This is Jed, he's a Newfoundland. He's four and a
half years old, and weighs 75 kilograms.
Jed loves to follow me around - he's a most
devoted dog. He also loves the water, and will
stand in it on a hot day for as long as I'll let
him!
Newfoundlands have a double layer of fur, which
keeps them toasty warm in winter, even in
water!
This means that on a hot day, he'll hunt down the
coolest shadiest place to relax in.
From Clare and Jed.
PS; He's
actually on a diet at the moment - a little bit too fond of the
food! He would cost around $50 per week to feed - maybe not
quite that much. Prospective Newf owners should be made
aware that larger dogs cost more for everything, not just food.
By that I mean flea control, any medicine or anaesthetics, as all
these are administered (and charged) by weight.

Rhodesian Ridgeback (Ridgeback) |
|
"Bear" Rhodesian
Ridgeback X Labrador
Here is "Bear" he was a five month old male Rhodesian
Ridgeback X Labrador I fostered for the SPCA. I actually ending
keeping him and he's now just over three years old. He's a very
loyal companion, very obedient and a real sook. Loves to chase
chooks when we're not looking & even "plucked" my
muscovy duck once. Didn't kill it; just decided it didn't need all
those feathers. Maybe he thought he could score himself a
featherdown quilt!!
