We welcome your
original contribution on Poodles. We want anecdotal information
about the nature, needs and character of Poodles from owners of the
breed. As opposed to technical breed standard information which is
readily found elsewhere. Published contributions are candid
reflections discussing the joys plus the pros and cons of each
breed. This is in order to help educate potential owners, so they
are well informed to make a choice of the best breed to suit the
needs of equally both the dog and the potential owners lifestyle -
hopefully reducing the need for later rehoming or rescue of a dog
that was not suited to a specific circumstance...

Lily the white Standard Poodle |
|
This is Lily (above). She is a
gorgeous white standard poodle. We got her from a breeder just out
of Wellington. She is only just 6 months and so beautiful. She
gets along well with other dogs and is obedient, intelligent and
she loves cuddles. We love her so much that we think we might get
another black standard poodle. She is on a special diet so she
doesn't (like other dogs) beg for your food while you're eating.
Lily isn't an ice white dog she is
creamy white. She prances around our front garden like she is a
show dog (it's really quite funny). You have to watch though
to make sure that when you're giving a command to her that you
have to be FIRM!
Always keep them busy, I highly
recommend poodles.

Rosie the black Standard poodle
|
I have a Standard Poodle bitch called Rosie and bought her from a
wonderful breeder up north.
Rosie has everything I can ask for brains, beauty and versatility!
I bought her as a companion for myself and my other dog and to do
competitive obedience and agility.
She's only 5 months and has completed puppy pre school classes,
canine companion classes and she's about to start more formal
lessons in the next fortnight. She has very good concentration
skills and a eager desire to please me.
However, she's a intelligent girl and any command taken in too
lightly will be pushed aside, with Poodle's you need to be firm,
consistent but kind..they are a very sensitive breed and can take
any criticisms to heart.
Poodle's are fun loving extroverts that take delight in impressing
people with their tricks and just generally being with people. They
were born to show off!
Poodle's are a high maintenance breed and need two lots of exercise
daily, preferably in the morning a walk and in the evening a run in
a safe dog park.
They need A LOT of mental stimulation. I provide my girl with a
buster cube that is a little ball filled with treats and small
little holes on the outside..the dog has to move the ball in
different directions to get the treats out..depending on the dog
it can takes hours or minutes.
Are they children savvy? Well, I have to go with my knowledge and
say yes they are pretty good with children PROVIDED they are always
supervised with an adult, just because they're a Poodle doesn't make
them any less likely to bite should a child provoke them.
Teach your pup and your child a relationship of love and respect for
each other and you shouldn't have a problem.
As I said above they are extroverts "loud mouths" in the
human world and have a real zest for life..hence they can be quite
overwhelming to children.
Grooming wise they can be quite a headache to people unwilling to do
it. Poodle's need to be clipped every 5 - 6 weeks and that can cost
from $60 - $100 I personally clip everyone 4 - 5 weeks.
If you get a Poodle you will have a sensitive loving companion that
will love you til the day you die provided that you look after THEM.
Poodle's have always been treated in luxury and should stay that way
;)
