Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still
savages."
Thomas Edison
Dear Friends,
It’s been a very busy and successful few
months. You haven’t heard from me for a while, as kitten season has
just come to a close…this is the busiest time of year for those of
us involved in cat and kitten rescue, capture, rehabilitation and
re-homing.
Thank you so much for your valuable
assistance in displaying and forwarding my e-mails and for
transporting, financing, rescuing and adopting so many animals since
my last newsletter. Homes are no longer needed for the chicken
couple Bob and Susan, 2 black Chinese Silky hens, 32 unnamed hens,
85 ex-battery hens, the roosters Barney, Valda, Sebastian, Cutie and
Ugly, the rabbits Sophie, Mr Bunny and Hari, the cats Frank, Arnie,
Reg, Smokey, Clayton, Rupert, Figaro, Natasha, Lili, Peter, Faith,
Taffy, Puszeli, Gabrielle, Mickey, Fifi, Riandra and Muzzy or the
kittens Champagne, Bella, Dennis, Cuddles, Redg, Tyke, Honey, Mo,
Tabitha, Coral, Serene, Phoenix and Cho Simba plus 11 unnamed
kittens. 14 adult cats have been de-sexed and returned to their
original environments, the cockatiel Billy and the budgie Chirpy
have new homes. The dogs Carter, Puppy, Minty, Buddy, Bailey,
Jasper, Smudge, Bandit and Ben have also been happily re-homed. The
Kunekune pigs Greta, Garbo and Pinky are safely enjoying their new
surroundings as are the goats Snowy, Snowey and Pippa. The bonded
horses Kelly and Fred now have a new home where they can stay
together and the goats Mildred and Marvin have a lovely home
awaiting them.
I deeply appreciate the help of
Pets on the Net, Happy Endings, C is for Cats,
The Humane Society, Auckland
Animal Action, Save Animals >From Exploitation, RIFE NZ, Forrest
Hill Vet Clinic, the Auckland SPCA and Purrpetual Boarding Cattery
among others, who have also been of great assistance. It’s lovely to
feel the support of like-minded individuals and agencies.
Thank you so much to all
of you!
Please continue to make a difference to
the lives of other creatures by forwarding my mail outs to all of
those caring people on your database and by purchasing my lovely
fundraising children’s poetry book (See end of newsletter). The
author’s kind actions are especially pertinent now, as the potential
mass chicken slaughter has again reared its ugly head.

Please be patient if I am unable to respond to you immediately –
this voluntary work can be all consuming, especially during rescues

DOGS
CUDDLY STAFFI X
SEEKS A LOVING HOME

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
One-year-old Hope was
found very skinny and cowering in a garage. When approached, she
rolled onto her back and whimpered. She ended up in a dog pound
awaiting euthanasia when she was rescued. Until a loving home is
offered for her, a lovely couple with dog training skills is
fostering Hope. They describe her as a bold, lively and extremely
affectionate little dog who loves life and is amazingly adaptable.
No longer timid, she learns quickly, follows commands, is not a
barker and travels well in
a car.
Hope is very friendly,
loves people, and is very well behaved with the two cats she is
currently living
with.
She is a typical bouncy, high-energy teenager so needs a reasonable
amount of exercise and ongoing training. Hope is a sweet,
intelligent dog
who would be great as someone’s much-loved pet.
She loves to be indoors
with her family in the evenings, curled up in front of the fire or
on someone’s lap, and isn’t suited to being a full time outdoor dog.
Hope
is spayed, fully vaccinated and flea and worm treated. If you
would like to apply to adopt this lovely dog, please contact me at:

CATS & KITTENS
KITTEN: BUDDY IS STILL WAITING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOME

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Buddy missed out on three homes when the
caregiver I chose for him changed her mind, so he is one of my
oldest rescue kittens and I know his nature well. At about 4 weeks
of age he was passed into the hands of an after hours vet nurse
without a word being uttered. The classic little tabby kitten was
very thin and had suffered a heavy blow to the bridge of his tiny
nose. When he was handled he would purr with abandon, but other than
that he was silent and inactive. After a week in our care, the
swelling and scabbing had left his nose and he was noisy, playful,
interactive, affectionate and very lively. Now about 9 months old,
short-coated Buddy has filled out beautifully, is great at using a
litter box and enjoys being in the middle of human activity. For
some reason, he is at his happiest being carried around the house in
our arms and he follows us from room to room. Although he is very
shy with strangers, Buddy soon warms to them if they spend a little
time playing with him and especially if they have a piece of string
on hand. Buddy is fully vaccinated, neutered, flea and worm treated.
If you would like to offer this handsome and nosy little man a home,
which is safe from traffic, dogs and young children, please apply to
me at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz Thank you. Photos available by request.

KITTEN: TABS SEEKS A LIFE OF LUXURY AFTER LIVING ROUGH

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Tabs is a sweet, 9-month-old kitten who
has lived most of her life fending for herself in a stray cat
colony. A kind lady managed to coax her into her home where she has
been learning to appreciate the luxury of two meals a day and
shelter from cats, dogs, violent people and harsh weather
conditions. Tabs is a pretty medium-coated and friendly little soul
with lovely tabby and spotted markings. With a little love and
sensitivity, she will get over her initial shyness and love you
right back. She is recently de-sexed, flea and worm treated and has
had the first of two vaccination injections. If you are able to
offer Sweetie a home that is safe from traffic, dogs and young
children, please apply to me at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz Thank you. Photos available by request.

KITTEN: WAI HAS BEEN RESCUED FROM A STRAY CAT COLONY

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Gorgeous little 6-month-old Wai and his
siblings are the last of the season’s kittens to be rescued from a
stray cat colony in Belmont, Auckland. The kind woman, who has tamed
him for me, gave him his Maori name, which means “Water”, as given
the chance, he enjoys splashing about with water. Wai is one of the
most extremely affectionate kittens to ever come into my care. He
loves to smooch, to gently face bunt and to interact with people.
This very attractive, golden eyed, long-coated ginger and white boy
will be an ideal pet for someone who is home all day or in a home
with more than one occupant, so that he can have plenty of
attention. He is recently de-sexed, flea and worm treated and has
had the first of two vaccination injections. Wai may be adopted
alone or with his sister (See advert for Sweetie). If you are able
to offer Wai a home that is safe from traffic, dogs and toddlers
please apply to me at

KITTEN: SWEETIE NEEDS A HOME WHERE TRUST IS FOSTERED

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Six-month-old Sweetie is a beautiful
looking girl with her long, soft coat, her large eyes and her tabby
and caramel stripes and spots. She was rescued from a stray cat
colony and is adjusting well to being in a human home. Although she
will be a little shy at first, with gentle coaxing and patience, she
will develop into a wonderful and affectionate pet. Already she
smooches and purrs when petted, although she resists being touched
when first approached. She is recently de-sexed, flea and worm
treated and has had the first of two vaccination injections. Sweetie
may be adopted alone or with her brother (See advert for Wai). If
you are able to offer Sweetie a home that is safe from traffic, dogs
and young children, please apply to me at

URGENT: SIBLING SISTER KITTENS NEED TAMING FOSTERER

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Please come back to me if you, or someone
you know has the space, time and patience to tame
two timid tortoiseshell
kittens to the point where they
are ready for adoption. Their current fosterer is unable to
continue caring for these lovely looking girls, so a new place
urgently needs to be found. Sophie and Sweetheart are approximately
five months old and have been spayed, fully vaccinated, flea and
worm treated. As rescued stray colony kittens, they will need lots
of love and work to bond with someone new and become confident.
Because the taming process is well
underway, it would be cruel to release them back into the
environment where housing developments have taken over their
territory. An indoor holding cage will be provided for the duration
of their taming, which could be up to a 6-month period. I hope there
is someone out there who will take pity on the plight of these
little ones. Please apply to me at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz if you have the temperament and
commitment to see this through. Thank you. Photos available by
request. Linda Nunn (Animal Re-homing)
ELDERLY CAT’S CAREGIVERS ARE LEAVING THE COUNTRY

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
The lovely cat named Tessa will soon have
nowhere to live, as her caregivers of almost 16 years are leaving
the country. This friendly shorthaired old girl has a pretty
blue-grey coat with a button of white on her chest. Although she is
still agile, her preference these days is to enjoy the warmth and
company of indoor living with a litter box available should she need
to use it. However, she sometimes takes short visits outside. Her
favourite sleeping places are on a human bed or cosy chair. Tessa is
a petite, lean cat with a healthy constitution and a love of human
company. Sometimes she can be timid with strangers, but when she
knows them, she is very affectionate and likes to sit on their lap
and be petted. She is spayed, vaccinated, flea and worm treated and
her dentistry is up to date. Because a dog once bit her, she must
not live with them. If you are able to offer Tessa a home that is
safe from traffic and young children, please apply to me at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz Thank you. Photos available by request.

CHANCE WAS SNATCHED
FROM A EUTHANASIA TABLE

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
This lovely boy was
one of 9 stray cats delivered to a vet clinic for euthanasia.
Surprisingly, when the vet lifted him from the holding cage, he
didn’t struggle or fight, so I was contacted. A year later, he is
sharing our home with us and has developed into a playful,
affectionate and nosy young man who still eats as though he doesn’t
know where his next meal will come from. Due to his intelligence and
street wisdom, Chance is by far our most mischievous foster cat. He
opens doors and cupboards and is always at the centre of trouble or
noise. He snuggles in for cuddles as a way to beg food from our
dinner plates and he likes to gently bat at our legs if we walk past
him without acknowledging him. This predominantly tabby cat with a
white chest, socks and tummy and a sweet inquiring little monkey
face, is ready for adoption with patient people who will respect his
beginnings. Because he is a little shy, Chance would best suit a
home without dogs, young children or busy roads nearby. He is
neutered, vaccinated, wormed and flea treated. Please contact me at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz
or by phoning (09) 479-1748, if you would like to be the only
permanent home Chance has ever been offered. Photos available by

CAT: HANDSOME NEEDS A
GENTLE HOUSEHOLD

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Sweet Handsome and his fellow strays
faced a rural gun barrel when we rescued him at about 2 years of
age. This submissive cat thoroughly lives up to his name, with his
pale grey colouring, white chest and paws and a lovely rounded face.
Soft caramel highlights add to his appeal. Having lived with us for
a year, he is ready to be adopted into a quiet home where he is
treated with patience and gentleness. He has transformed into a
lovely sensitive boy who allows us to lift him onto our knees and
stroke his head while he purrs with glee. He still hides when we
have visitors and that may be his manner for the rest of his life.
With the right couple or individual he will become deeply attached
and an affectionate and grateful companion with a delightful trill
when he is expressing his joy. He is timid, but not at all
aggressive. Please think about Handsome when you are considering a
true rescue cat. He is fully toilet trained, neutered, vaccinated,
flea and worm treated and his dentistry is up to date. Because
Handsome is shy, he would suit a home without children or dominant
cats. He must not live near traffic, or with dogs. Handsome may be
adopted alone or with his three-legged friend (See advert for
Grace). If you think
you are the perfect home for this soft-natured boy, please contact
Linda Nunn (Animal Re-homing) at

CAT: THREE LEGGED GRACE NEEDS A ONE-OF-A-KIND HOME

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
I trapped the stray teenaged kitten Grace
over a year ago, as she was excruciatingly thin and I had seen her
limping badly, but couldn’t get close enough to determine her pain.
It was a horrific and old injury with both bones of the right leg
shattered and hanging, while the insects fed on her flesh. The vet
mentioned the possibility of euthanasia as she slipped off the
counter and hobbled into a cupboard for safety, but I asked him the
cost to amputate her leg. Knowing me well, he kindly gave me a one
third discount and accepted my request to pay off the bill. Last
week, the same vet was delighted to give a healthy and much braver
Grace her annual vaccination. Grace is a petite, predominantly
blue-grey Tortishell with a lovely close coat and a nervous little
round-eyed face that melts and relaxes when she is petted. She has
recently learned to purr and has just discovered the joys of human
touch. I am now able to lift her on to my knee for a good cuddle
session, but it has taken a year to build her confidence. Pretty
little Grace is fully vaccinated, spayed, flea and worm treated. She
must be offered a patient and understanding haven where she will be
given all the time in the world to settle in and become brave enough
to interact with her caregivers. After spending at least a month
with you indoors, it’s possible she will choose to live outside and
only come into your home occasionally. Dear Grace may be adopted
alone or with her close friend for company (See advert for
Handsome). Please contact me at
linda.paul@xtra.co.nz if you think you have the temperament that
will wait for a very timid and long traumatised young cat to trust,
to feel secure and to want to stay with you for the rest of her
life. Photos available by request. Thank you. Linda Nunn (Animal

CAT FRIENDS JACK & JIM MUST BE ADOPTED TOGETHER

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
When their elderly caregiver
passed away, these two very bonded cats were left without the loving
care they had become used to. They spent time in a boarding cattery
and are now being cared for by family members who are not in a
position to adopt them. Handsome Jimmy with his elegant stature and
soft grey colouring is the more gregarious of the two. He was
rescued from the same stray cat colony where his friend Jack was
abandoned when close to death – both were kittens. Jack is a big
shy, talkative cat with beautiful dark grey and solid white
markings. They are both neutered, vaccinated, flea and worm treated
and their dentistry is right up to date. Although these 3.5-year-old
mates are both affectionate, they will be nervous at first. Their
fosterers would initially like to stay in touch when the boys are
adopted, as they are very fond of them and are closely related to
the previous caregiver. If you have a quiet adult home and will
enjoy the process of patiently winning over the trust of these
companions, I would be delighted to hear from you. Applicants must
not live near busy streets or have any other animals. Please apply
to
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz Thank you. Photos available by request.

BIRDS
URGENT: CHICKENS FACE COUNCIL SLAUGHTER

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Although I am prepared to humanely
capture the several hundred chickens who have been casually dumped
by thoughtless people at a commercial shopping centre and park, I
must first secure homes for them. By far the majority of these
abandoned birds are roosters, so I am hopeful that there are kind
folk in rural areas who are happy to have a colourful all rooster
colony under their care. If you are able to provide a safe haven for
any number of these homeless creatures, I look forward to hearing
back from you ASAP. Between us all, we have prevented the annual
cull for the past 2 years and as there are plans afoot to stop the
dumping of unwanted chickens, we should not have to repeat this life
saving process. Please come back to me if you, or someone you know,
has a rural property that is safe from dogs, traffic, poachers and
intolerant neighbours. All chickens will be treated for worms, lice
and mites before adoption. Some hens (and possibly chicks) will need
safe homes too. Please contact me at

ROOSTERS ON DEATH ROW
NEED SIMPLE LODGINGS

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this
animal on petsonthenet.co.nz)
Dozens of sturdy, self-sufficient
roosters are at risk of an annual cull, unless they are captured and
re-homed by the end of the year. Do you, or a friend, have enough
free-range land for a low maintenance, colourful, all-rooster colony
of 2 or more boys to live out their natural lifespan on your
property? They will need to be fed once a day and to roost in the
trees at night. Please give this your deepest consideration, as
these lovely roosters face slaughter if no one offers them a home.

There are vulnerable roosters among many
abandoned chickens who are in need of comfortable homes, which must

traffic. I look forward to hearing from you on

In the near future, 500 ex-battery hens
will need to be fostered and rehabilitated from their tormented
lives prior to their adoption. Please let me know if you, or someone
you know, has an appropriate place to shelter some of these wretched
creatures. If you are in a position to foster 10 or more, please
come back to me. If you would like to adopt three or more, I would
also like to hear from you. My contact is

girls, please contact me on

URGENT: GEESE FACE MASS SLAUGHTER UNLESS ADOPTED

(Click headline above to see pictures and adoption status of this

A park in Auckland has become overcrowded
with geese of all ages who will be culled, unless homes are offered
to them. Geese will keep the grass down, fertilise the land and they
make excellent watchdogs. Initially, they will need to be
comfortably enclosed, fed and watered for 3-4 weeks, so that they
don’t return to their original home. Successful applicants must be
willing to have me or my representative visit the geese at 3-monthly
intervals. If you live in the North Island and are able to offer
safe, lifelong havens to any number of these beautiful creatures,

only apply if you have at least an acre of land for them to range

They may be separated into groups of two or more of the same gender

IS
YOUR PROPERTY DOG PROOF?
The rescuers of a hyperactive dog seek
somewhere in Auckland’s Kingsland area to exercise and train her in
safety for an hour or so at a time. Your property would need to be
large enough for her to burn off some energy chasing a ball, etc and
your fences and gates would need to be at least 6 foot high as Daisy
is a great jumper. Daisy would be supervised at all times and it
would be great if she could use your property whether or not you
were at home. At this stage Daisy is sometimes aggressive with other
dogs, so there would need to be no other dogs around during her
training and exercise sessions. I look forward to hearing back from
you at
linda.paul@actrix.co.nz Thank you.

appreciate your voluntary assistance in this area. Please let me

PLEASE BUY A FUND-RAISING BOOK…
Dear Friends,
An animal lover from Muriwai, Auckland,
offered permanent sanctuary to almost 100 of my rescued roosters,
who were destined for a council slaughter. I have visited this
thriving colony often and these fortunate boys are enjoying a
wonderful lifestyle, fed daily and free ranging on his large
property.
Don realised that my husband and I were
unfunded and footing all the bills for the many species of animals
we rescue, re-home and advocate for. We have outstanding veterinary
expenses, petrol costs, animal transportation throughout the North
Island, nationwide toll and mobile phone calls, cage purchases, the
costs of materials to build humane traps and enclosures, the various
feeds required, etc. Our paid employment is struggling to finance
our voluntary work.
This caring man happens to be an author
and has written a colourful children’s storybook of rhyme, which he
dedicated to his much-loved friend, Bandit the cat. He has kindly
donated copies of this attractive, A4 sized, paperback book to
assist us in being a voice and an aid for animals in difficulty.
The 32 pages of beautiful coloured
illustrations will delight even the youngest of children and the
quirky animal stories will appeal to all age groups…including adult
children.
Please support our work by ordering “Pack
Rat Stew & Other Tales” written by Don Batley and illustrated by
Chris Schipper. They will make lovely gifts for the children in your
life or for libraries, schools and kindergartens in your area.
Thank you so much for making a difference
to our work and to all the creatures we are involved with assisting.
With love and appreciation,

“If man is not to
stifle his human feelings, he must practice kindness towards
animals,
for he who is cruel
to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.
We can judge the
heart of a man by his treatment of animals”.
Immanuel Kant |
