Some of the thousands of pets adopted via petsonthenet since 2002

We've also adopted birds, both domestic and poultry (not for the pot!), axolotls, rats, turtles, goats and horses. See more of our NZ Pet for Adoption Success Stories

Please adopt, don't buy!
If you or anyone you know is considering adding a pet to their family, please don't "buy" a pet from a petshop. Please consider adoption and rehoming of a shelter dog, puppy, cat or kitten etc via petsonthenet or your local SPCA, pound or animal shelter first. Click here to see our pets for adoption. Animals that are not adopted within a certain time (seven days in some places) may be euthanised. Thousands of beautiful companion animals die this way every year and it is heartbreaking! Shelters struggle with little money to provide for these pets until they are rehomed. With the recession, our pets for adoption section has increased *exponentially*.

Our philosophy has always been NOT to accept ads from petshops and we no longer accept ads for Pets for Sale either. We believe more pets die in shelters when petshops and backyard breeders keep feeding cute pups and kittens etc into the world, with only profits in mind. With a finite number of homes in NZ, this means some animals will die...as supply simply exceeds demand, especially in these harder economic times. Petshops also sell supposed "purebreeds" and "designer dogs" often without registration/papers. Some of these animals may have inherited health problems or defects which could mean costly vet bills further down the track. If you absolutely set on a purebreed, contact a trusted registered breeder ie an NZKC registered breeder for dogs.

It is also critical to desex your pet, so the supply of unwanted kittens and pups does not keep increasing. Many shelter pets will be desexed already, saving you money. Please, please, save a life - adopt, don't buy...
